Executive Awareness of Collaboration (In)Security is on the Rise

Mimecast’s The State of Email Security 2023 report confirms what many have long suspected: executives are more than aware of the threat that under-secured collaboration platforms present to the modern enterprise, especially after the hyper-growth of these platforms and increased dependency on them during the pandemic.

Collaboration (In)Security in a Nutshell

  • 90% agree that collaboration tools are essential to the well-ordered functioning of their companies.
  • 67% can’t keep up with the number of collaboration tools their organizations use.
  • 55% complain that employees routinely download and use new tools that have not been vetted or approved by IT.
  • Use of collaboration apps is growing at 82%.
  • 38% see attacks due to collaboration rising.
  • 75% see collaboration tools posing new threats and creating new security loopholes.
  • 94% agree that additional security measures are needed to supplement native security functions on Google Workspace and Microsoft O365.

It’s clear from the report that executives across sectors have doubts about collaboration security and how easily it can be compromised. In fact, 66% of the respondents believe that their organization needs to increase their budgets for securing collaboration.

But Where do You Draw the Line?

Bolting on security may help the overall enterprise, but for an enterprise’s most sensitive communications, not enough security can easily be added without significantly degrading user experiences on collaboration platforms or without sacrificing governance and enterprise controls.

Think security, threat intelligence sharing, vulnerability management, and executive communications – the kind of data that is often the target of reconnaissance attacks.
